A full diagnostic assessment enables teachers and parents to recognise and meet a person's learning needs and know how best to support them. This assessment takes place in the child's home or school (by agreement). Prior to the assessment, questionnaires are filled by parents and /or the school to give background information regarding the learner’s history. This ensures that the assessment is focused on the concerns that are raised for the learner.
What does the assessment involve?
The assessment normally takes between 2.5 and 3 hours and may be completed over one or two sessions, depending on the individual. The assessment will investigate underlying ability, working memory, phonological awareness and processing speed. In addition, assessment of academic attainments in the areas of reading, spelling and writing are carried out. These reports are based on the SpLD Assessment Standards Committee (SASC) guidance, meaning that they are suitable beyond post-16 education, and can be used for Disabled Students’ Allowance if applicable.
Once completed, a full written report will be issued within two-three weeks. The report will include the results, conclusions of the assessments together with recommended strategies. On occasions, referrals to other professionals may be recommended as well.
A follow up phone call can be arranged to discuss the findings of the report.
